Acupuncture Treatment – What to Expect

Please reach us at info@terriclaireacupuncture.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

✓ Wear loose, comfortable clothing (easy access to arms and legs)
✓ Eat a light meal beforehand
✓ Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment
✓ Do not scrape or brush your tongue for 2–3 days prior
✓ Avoid strongly coloured foods or drinks that may stain your tongue

Your initial session lasts approximately 60–90 minutes.

We begin with a detailed consultation covering:

  • Your main concerns and symptoms

  • Medical history

  • Sleep, digestion, stress levels, and lifestyle

  • Tongue and pulse assessment (traditional diagnostic methods)

This allows your practitioner to create a personalised treatment plan based on your unique presentation.

Follow-up sessions typically last 45–60 minutes.

You will lie comfortably on a treatment couch in a calm, relaxing environment.

Very fine, sterile single-use needles are gently inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body. These points are chosen to help regulate and balance your system.

Sensations vary from person to person, but you may experience:

  • A slight tingling or dull ache

  • Warmth or heaviness

  • A gentle spreading sensation

  • Deep relaxation

Many people feel so relaxed they drift into a light sleep.

The needles are usually retained for 20–30 minutes while you rest quietly.

Some people notice improvements after their first treatment, particularly with pain or tension. For more chronic or complex conditions, a course of treatments is usually recommended.

A typical plan may involve:

  • Weekly sessions for 4–6 weeks

  • Followed by maintenance treatments as needed

Your practitioner will discuss a realistic treatment plan with you.

 It’s common to feel:

  • Deeply relaxed or calm

  • Slightly tired

  • Energised and clear-headed

Occasionally, symptoms may temporarily shift as your body adjusts — this is usually mild and short-lived.

 To support your treatment:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day

  • Eat nourishing meals

  • Allow time to rest if needed

  • Avoid alcohol immediately after treatment

Listening to your body is key.

Some private health insurance policies include acupuncture treatment. As cover varies between providers and plans, we recommend confirming the details with your insurer directly.
